The Swirling World of Genealogists

Genealogy is the #1 most popular hobby on the internet and receives more hits than porn!  Today, things have certainly changed.  No more days of dusty old books and a handful of published genealogies or source records.  Gone is the need to spend all of one's time at a library or archives somewhere.  It is my personal belief that the internet was invented for genealogy.  The first thing which genealogists did when the internet started up was to publish their gedcom files (from a software program) to the internet.  This was easy, because the program launched it for you and no skills were required.  As those began to disappear, I noticed some nice web pages detailing the results of research. Then the genweb project was launched.  The idea there was to garner volunteers to sponsor certain counties who would post donated information sent by more volunteers.  For years, this project languished. I liked the concept, but the volunteer thing did not seem to work too well.  Of course, eventually purchased it and seemed to use the web pages more for advertising than anything else. You probably do not know this, but has purchased many genealogical websites, including the book seller,  My favorite free site is  There is simply tons of information on that website for the genealogist and it is user friendly.  You used to follow a link only to discover that the page had been taken down.  Not any more.  Genealogy websites are here to stay. It is the ideal place to publish the work which you spent your life doing.  That is what I am doing.   Jeannette Holland Austin. Georgia Pioneers
