Where to Find records of settlers of Atlanta

Henry, DeKalb and Fulton Counties. The first county to represent present-day Atlanta or Fulton County was Henry County. As divisions began to occur in county lines, it then went to DeKalb County, and finally in 1853 to Fulton County. If your people resided in Alpharetta, that is old Milton County. However, Atlanta was not the capitol until 1868. Therefore, all of these county records need to be researched if you expect to find anything on your families.  It can be complex comparing records to determine if, say, Henry Smith in 1830 Henry County is the same one as Henry Smith in 1840 DeKalb County. That is why it is so important to examine the old wills, find the names of the heirs, then search for each heir in all of the court house records.
