Why read old wills?

One of the most interesting things about reading old last wills and testaments if the amount of genealogical and historical content. You can get a good idea about the size of the farm or plantation simply by reading the inventories and the appraisements of the estate. The names of neighbors appear throughout the probate, because neighbors married daughters and purchased items from the estate. Also, they gave their notes for purchasing goods from the farm and some even inherited. To learn who inherited, read all of the annual returns, every year until the probate ended.  When someone dies, the first thing which happens is the will is given to the Probate Court and the heirs have an opportunity to come forward, or anyone with a claim against the estate. It is extremely important to read the old will fully and identify names. You do this by checking out the marriage records for that county. That tells you who the relatives were.  The genealogists performs an exact science of the facts by studying old wills and estates.
