Familiarize yourself with every possible relative

If you really want to find your ancestors, you must read the old wills and estates from the local county court house, but preferably online where images are actually easier to view.  And, this is important, include the wills of other relatives, spouses, cousins, the children, etc. Why? Because they frequently family members and identify relationships!  Hence, if you have a daughter who married John Smith, you should examine the John Smith will and possibly other Smith wills to see what is going on in that family. You will be surprised at what you learn. In other words, look for the will of every single family member.
