Surviving Records in Georgia

Court house fires and General Sherman were the culprits for so many lost records. When Sherman came to Atlanta, his army torch the records before 1864 in Cobb, Fulton, Gwinnett and Dekalb Counties. Granted, a few books survived, but only because they were removed in time. Follow the path south east to Savannah. The only county were all of the old wills, marriages and deeds survived was Chatham, dating from 1777.
